Hi, and welcome to The My Future Business Show!
Today, I had the pleasure of talking with the Dean of the School of Business at Central Connecticut State University, Professor Ken Colwell.
Given how busy Ken is with his work, it was certainly a privilege to spend some time talking about various business-related topics with him. So, thank you, Ken!
Prior to becoming a Dean, Ken was an entrepreneurship professor at the University of Miami in Florida. So, if there is anyone qualified to talk about what it takes to become successful in business, then Ken is that person.
During the call, Ken and I talk about entrepreneurship, and how it’s probably not right for everyone. The main reason for this being the case, is that you need to have a completely different mindset than if you were an employee.
With that in mind, as an entrepreneur, you can wake in the morning and decide to do whatever you choose. That said, if you choose to do nothing at all, then nothing at all will happen in your business. When you get up in the morning, your whole focus must be on moving the needle, otherwise your business is unlikely to be successful. Thus, if it’s going to happen, then it is up to [you] to make it happen.
In order to move that needle, you must have the right mindset, and a way to organize your day such that you achieve consistent measurable progress. Having to make progress on your own is very different than being an employee. As an employee, you arrive at a certain time, clock in, have a cup of coffee, check your email, talk a while, then maybe do some work.
One of the key takeaways for me during the call, was the idea that failure is not seen as failure in the eyes of entrepreneurs, instead, they view it as a temporary setback and a learning experience, and use it as fuel to push them forward.
Now, regardless if you intend to build an online business, an offline business, or a combination of both, there are many moving parts to consider. So, if you’re just beginning your entrepreneurial journey, then a good resource to get your hands on right now, is Professor Colwell’s book “Starting a Business – QuickStart Guide”
